(Courtesy, The Art Commission of New York). This drawing from the early 1900's shows the original planned location for the Maine Monument. ( In those days Times Square was known as "Longacre Square"). Mysteriously, a public toilet was built on the space in 1902 forcing the location of the monument to the present site. This was the "bureaucratic oversight" that some historians conjecture was instigated by the New York Times. Perhaps it's just as well - it's hard to imagine the monumen in today's Times Square right where the TKTS booth is located.
