
(Photo, John Orth). These figures on the front side of the monument are known as Courage, Peace (standing female) and Fortitude. Attilio's inspiration for Courage is said to be a sculpture by Michelangelo in the Medici Chapel called Night. Fortitude is a moving and eloquent image of the sadness and grief felt by many American families after the loss of loved ones when the Maine was attacked.
