Faculty Spotlight: Professor Penny Prince Wins Thirteenth ASCAP Award
The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP)
has awarded Professor Penny Prince (Music) her thirteenth consecutive
award for educational and popular music composition. On campus,
Professor Prince is known for her original musical theatrical
productions, staged during the spring semester.
A prolific composer, Professor Prince has built a reputation for collaborating with her cast members to create new material. She has produced several productions at Lehman, including Rapunzel, Cinderella, Rumpelstiltskin, and Sleeping Beauty. Her musical When I Get To Where I’m Going, about the civil rights bus boycotts of the 1950s, was recently performed at a middle school in Brooklyn under the direction of Lehman alumnus Michel Mok.
“When Michel was a student at Lehman, he attended a performance of our play about the bus boycott movement, and now, as a music teacher in Brooklyn, he was determined to stage the show with his own students,” explains Professor Prince. “It was thrilling to attend the show and see what a new generation of pupils did with the material.”
A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Professor Prince earned her Ph.D. in music education from the Steinhardt School at NYU.
