From the Chair

Welcome to the 2012-2013 academic year. I will be on leave for Fall 2012 and will return to active chairing duties in the spring of 2013. I'm delighted that
Prof. Laird Bergad will serve as Acting Chair in my absence, and Prof. David Badillo will serve as Deputy Chair of the Department of Latin American and Puerto Rican Studies for fall 2012.

We are still basking in the excitement of many recent accomplishments, including the launch of the CUNY-wide Institute of Mexican Studies and the approval of our new major and minor in Latino/Puerto Rican Studies. Look for our upcoming Open House to launch the LPR major. Learn about new and exciting courses in Latino Health, Latino Media, History of US Latinos, and many others. We continue to offer our major and minor in Latin American Studies and ourminor in Mexican Studies. We are happy to discuss the opportunities to majoror minor in our department and how any one of our majors and minors fit yourcareer choices.

Feel free to contact the department faculty to discuss anyquestions related to our programs and courses. We encourage you to look through our webpage for more information aboutour excellent faculty, far-ranging curriculum, and exciting events. And wehope you will "like" us on our Facebook page!To tell you a little bit about myself, I joined the Lehman faculty in 2003 and have enjoyed teaching courses on Caribbean and Latin American literature, Latin American film, and Latin American and Puerto Rican popular music. My main areas of research include gender and sexuality studies, critical theory ,and popular culture. Currently, I am working on a book entitled The Politics of Voice: Gender and Popular Music in Puerto Rico, 1935-1995, forthcoming from Duke University Press. All of us at LAPRS look forward to a very productive year.
