From the Chair

The Department of Languages and Literatures offers a variety of courses in French, Greek, Hebrew, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. Courses in Arabic, Chinese, and German are offered off campus as part of the Lehman-Manhattan College Language Consortium. The Department also offers courses in literature and culture conducted in English, some of which satisfy the distribution requirement. In addition, a special Spanish-language sequence is offered for heritage speakers of Spanish to enable them to preserve and enhance their knowledge of Spanish. Read more

Faculty Spotlight

ladoBeatriz Lado joined the Department of Languages and Literatures in Fall 2011 as an Assistant Professor in Spanish. She received her M.A. in Linguistics from Louisiana State University, and an M.S. and Ph. D. in Spanish Applied Linguistics from Georgetown University. Before coming to Lehman, Beatriz was an Assistant Professor at the University of San Diego, where she served as the language coordinator and taught language and linguistics courses. Her current research focuses on the interaction between external (e.g., type of feedback and degree of explicitness in pedagogical interventions) and internal variables (e.g., prior language experience and cognitive capacity) in the development of a non-primary language. At Lehman, she teaches Spanish language and linguistics courses. Starting in the summer of 2012, she will serve as the director of the Linguistics interdisciplinary program.
