Lehman Theater Program Earns KCACTF Region I Merit Awards
The Theatre Program at Lehman College – City University of New York has earned two Merit Awards in Acting Performance from respondents of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KC/ACTF) Region 1 for its fall theatre productions of Marisol and Noises Off.
For Lehman’s production of Marisol by Jose Rivera in November, 2012, the acting company under the direction of guest artist John Clancy earned an award for "Meritorious Achievement in Cohesive Ensemble" Performance. The ensemble included Lehman students Melibelle Lavandier, Dexter Thomas-Payne, Edina Celjaj, Kailah King, Erachie Brown, Angie Nunez, Edgard Toro, and Kelvin Veras. Marisol is an apocalyptic urban fantasy, set in the Bronx, which urges society to “wake up” and somehow find a way to recover the long-lost and much-needed compassion for our fellow man, as this is the only way to save our world.
In December 2012, theatre major Emmanuel Delgado earned an award for "Extraordinary Characterization & Performance Through Physical Comedy" for his portrayal of Frederick Fellowes in the popular British farce Noises Off by Michael Frayn. Directed by guest artist George Heslin in Lehman’s Studio Theatre, this popular British farce features “a play within a play” with slamming doors, backstage drama, and physical comedy.
Started in 1969 by Roger L. Stevens, the Kennedy Center's founding chairman, the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) is a national theater program involving 18,000 students from colleges and universities nationwide which has served as a catalyst in improving the quality of college theater in the United States. The KCACTF has grown into a network of more than 600 academic institutions throughout the country, where theater departments and student artists showcase their work and receive outside assessment by KCACTF respondents.
Respondents from KC/ACTF Region 1, which includes New England and part of New York state, attended the shows in the fall and nominated the Lehman students for the merit awards.
