Faculty: Sean McCarthy
Sean McCarthy received his BFA in Studio Art from the University of
Texas at Austin and his MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale
University. His paintings and drawings have been exhibited
internationally at venues such as Marlborough Chelsea in New York, One
in the Other in London, and VOLTAshow in Basel, Switzerland. He is
currently represented by Fredericks & Freiser Gallery in New York,
where he had solo exhibitions in 2008 and 2011. In addition to his
practice as a fine artist, Professor McCarthy is an active member of the
New York zine and comics community—in 2011 he was one of twelve
artists featured at the Desert Island Comic Zine Party at the Whitney
Museum of American Art, which produced a limited-edition screenprinted
publication for the event. His zines have also appeared at curated
events such as the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival, the Toronto
Comic Arts Festival, and a global survey of zine culture called "Publish
and Be Damned" at Cubitt Artists Gallery in London.
Professor McCarthy has given lectures and critiques as a visiting artist
at the MacDougal Center at Yale University, Rhode Island School of
Design, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and the University of
South Florida. In 2010 he taught a seminar on the grotesque in art and
culture for the Lehman Scholars Program and Macaulay Honors College; in
the same year he was invited to teach Senior Thesis in Printmaking as a
Visiting Assistant Professor at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He has
curated exhibitions at the Lehman College Art Gallery (Nature, Once
Removed: The (Un)Natural World in Contemporary Drawing) and the New York Institute of Technology, and is currently curating a
show of Montreal-based artists for No Globe Exhibition Space in
Brooklyn. He is the Art Section Editor of Glossator: Theory and Practice
of the Commentary, an academic journal published by the CUNY Graduate
Center.
Since 2006 he has taught an extensive range of courses in design,
drawing, painting and printmaking in the Lehman College Art Department.
