From the Chair
The Department of African and African American Studies is in the School of Arts and Humanities with such departments as History, Music, Latin American, Latino, and Puerto Rican Studies, English, and Philosophy. Undergraduates can gain a major or a minor in African & African American Studies, and/or combine a major with Early Childhood Education studies. Courses taken in African and African American Studies can also fulfill the College's GEN. ED. distribution requirement in historical studies, comparative culture, the arts, or literature (read more).
Dr. Mary Phillips, Assistant Professor in African & African American Studies has been award a Faculty Fellowship at the Center for Place, Culture, and Politics based at the Graduate Center - CUNY for the academic year 2015-2016. Dr. Phillips will engage with distinguished scholars at the Graduate Center, and present her research via seminars at the center. Currently, she is working on the final drafts of her first book that will consider the role of women in the Black Panther Party.
