From the Chair
The Department of African and African American Studies is in the School of Arts and Humanities with such departments as History, Music, Latin American and Puerto Rican Studies, English, and Philosophy. Courses taken in African and African American Studies can fulfill the College's distribution requirement in historical studies, comparative culture, the arts, or literature (read more).
Mark Christian Professor and Chair of the Department of African and African American Studies has received the OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC TITLE award from CHOICE, the major reviewer of academic titles for libraries. The edited volume is titled Integrated but Unequal: Black Faculty in Predominately White Space (Africa World Press, 2012). On receiving his award Professor Christian stated: "I am pleased to receive recogntion for this book because it relates to the nuanced experiences of faculty of color in mainstream academia, and therefore in being acknowledged in this manner it shows that mainstream institutions are open to this kind of work."
